Richmond, Virginia is one of the most historically significant cities in America. The former capital of the Confederacy is also home to Jackson Ward — the Harlem of the South — a historic Black neighborhood that produced some of the most important figures in African American business history, including Maggie L. Walker, the first Black woman to found and serve as president of a bank. Today, Richmond is experiencing a full cultural and economic renaissance anchored by Black creativity, entrepreneurship, and community investment. From Church Hill to Jackson Ward to the Near Westend, RVA's Black-owned businesses are building something permanent.
